Tennessee NASIS data element population guide

Highest Priority Data Elements

National required data elements per National bulletin 430-5-7.  These data elements are required now.

The largest job represented here is the cleanup of the Component table, Component Name data element.

Click here for the National Soil Handbook subject index.

NASIS Table NASIS Column(s) Data Population Notes Action Required
Legend Area Symbol Maintained by NSSC None - NASIS Query MO18 "TN - Area/Leg/Rep.DMU . . . "
Legend Area Overlap Area Symbol required area types = MLRA, State, County; SO/MO responsibility None
Mapunit Area Overlap Mapunit Symbol for areas in Legend Area Overlap table; SO/MO responsibility None
Mapunit Mapunit Symbol   None
Mapunit Name   None
Component Comp % (RV)   For any mapunit less than 100% - add "Minor Components" to equal 100% (component kind = series). Hydric components have their own line.
Component Name soil and approved miscellaneous area names Remove any parentheses or other phase information. Capture parentheses correlation decisions in mapunit history table as correlation amendment notes.
For soil name changes: Event = Amendment and Kind = Name Change; For phase differences (texture, slope, etc.): Event = Amendment and KIND = Notes to Accompany. Also populate "Local Phase" in Component Table.
Kind   Check to verify correct; See definitions of Miscellaneous areas.
Major Component Flag Yes or No; Yes except for hydric inclusions We are not populating data for minor components at this time. Check to make sure this is "Yes"  for all major components and "No" for minor components (hydric components per official hydric list and "Minor Components" from Comp % RV above).
Slope Gradient (L,RV,H)   Check against mapunit name - Use NASIS M018 report "Check - Slope"
T already populated for existing data - Global assign by series None
WEI Needs state guidance Wait for more instructions
WEG Needs state guidance Wait for more instructions
Drainage Class already populated for existing data - Global assign by series None
Hydrologic Group   Do away with dual classes (B/D, C/D, etc.); Rock Outcrop is "D" (globally assigned).
Order Do not edit None
Suborder Do not edit None
Great Group Do not edit None
Subgroup Do not edit None
Temp Regime Do not edit None
Component Month Month all 12 months None
Flooding Frequency enter “none” for all months if no flooding at any time during the year Check against published soil survey; only one frequency per mapunit. "None" for any soils that don't flood. Nulls allowed for flooded soils in non-flooded months.
Flooding Duration   Check against published soil survey
Ponding Frequency enter “none” for all months if no ponding at any time during the year Check against published soil survey; only one frequency per mapunit. "None" for any soils that don't pond. Nulls allowed for ponded soils in non-ponded months.
Ponding Duration   Check against published soil survey
Ponding Depth (L,RV,H)   Check against published soil survey
Component Soil Moisture Moisture Status required if status = wet Check for all hydric components. If perched, make sure that a non-wet row follows a wet row.
Top Depth (L,RV,H)   Check to verify that Low-High-RV are populated for ALL rows used in the table. For perched water tables (3 rows in table) populate the restrictive layer Low and High values from OSD; RV from survey data.
Component Restrictions Kind required if kind = bedrock lithic or paralithic Also required for fragipans in TN. High and Low will be globally assigned for null values.
Top Depth (L,RV,H)   Make RV agree with TP from published soil survey and horizon depths.
Component Interpretation Kind required only if kind = hydric; already populated for existing data Check hydric minor components to make sure they agree with published official hydric list
Rating required only if hydric rating = yes; already populated for existing data Check or populate for all hydric components
Restriction required only if interp kind = hydric and interp rating = yes; already populated for existing data Check or populate for all hydric components
Component Geomorphic Description RV? required for all hydric components only at this time, populate columns as appropriate; See glossary of landform terms (Required for all components in N2) Populate with Yes then populate landform, exists on, and landscape
Feature Type Enter rows for both Landscape and Landform; Alphabetical list of landform and landscape terms; Landscape globally assigned by series Tennessee required element; Tennessee list of landscapes and landforms to use with example
Feature Name Tennessee required element; Tennessee list of landscapes and landforms to use with example
Feature Modifier Any Text Tennessee required element; Tennessee list of landscapes and landforms to use with example
Feature ID Any number Tennessee required element; Tennessee list of landscapes and landforms to use with example
Exists On Feature ID Landforms exist on Landscape Feature ID's Tennessee required element; Tennessee list of landscapes and landforms to use with example
Horizon Designation old H1, H2, … are okay, but see requirement for O horizon in the Master column; already populated for existing data Check for soils with diagnostic organic layer(s)
Master required for “O” horizons Check for soils with diagnostic organic layer(s)
Top Depth (RV) already populated for existing data None
Bottom Depth (RV) already populated for existing data None
Total Sand (RV) can be calculated; already populated for existing data None
Total Silt (RV) can be calculated via particle size estimator; already populated for existing data None
Total Clay (RV) already populated for existing data None
OM (L,RV,H) organic matter All Layers??
Ksat (L,RV,H) Guide for estimating Ksat from soil properties None (?)
LEP (RV) linear extensibility percent (see COLE) None
Kw for mineral soils, leave organic horizons null; See soil erodibility nomograph Verify that Kw is <= Kf (report/query needed)
Kf for mineral soils, leave organic horizons null None
pH H2O (L,RV,H) mineral soils None
pH CaCl2 (L,RV,H) organic soils; Global assign Populate for soils w/ organic layers
Horizon Texture Group Tex Mod & Class must indicate the RV row; Calculated from Horizon Texture and Horizon Texture Modifier; already populated for existing data Verify RV has been selected for each layer, and is compatible w/ clay RV
Horizon Texture Texture for the RV row in the Texture Group table, must indicate RV row; See Textural Triangle; already populated for existing data None
