Asian American/Pacific Islander Special Emphasis Program

Nancy W. Harris, Asian American/Pacific Islander Special Emphasis Program Manager

Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the United States.  The purpose of the AAPI Special Emphasis Program is to provide focus on issues such as employment, promotion, training, and career enhancement affecting AAPI employees and applicants in NRCS.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.  May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States in May, 1843 and to mark the completion of the transcontinental railroad in May, 1869.  The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.  This national celebration was established in 1977.

I encourage all offices and employees to learn more about the diverse cultures among AAPIs and support and participate in Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
